Press Release: Carolina Ice Cream Company Kicks-Off New Flavor Contest with Johnson & Wales University

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 12, 2013) – Front Porch® Carolina Churned Ice Cream kicked-off the Second Annual Front Porch New Flavor Competition with Johnson & Wales University Charlotte Campus to find the next Southern-inspired recipe for their ice cream brand.

“We love this opportunity to get fresh ideas from the students,” said Michael Werran, production manager at Mooresville Ice Cream Company and Front Porch. “Translating the recipes into mass production is the hardest part of the process and these students are educated about the real-world application of this contest.”

The Second Annual Front Porch New Flavor Competition is open exclusively to JWU students. Of the submitted recipes, ten finalists will be selected to create their ice cream recipes for a judging event on April 26 at the university. Each of the 10 finalists will receive a $100 gift card. Then, of the 10 finalists, one will win a Grand Prize of $1,000. The Runner-Up will win $500. Guests of the event will vote for a People’s Choice award, with a prize of $100.

“The Front Porch New Flavor Competition is always exciting for our students,” said Nicole Saunders, coordinator of student activities. “It’s a great opportunity to put their culinary arts education to work, in a real-world opportunity.”

Student Activities and Assistant Professor Chef John Maas are sponsoring the contest, along with Mooresville Ice Cream Company, LLC.

“I am happy to be a sounding board as the students work on the next great flavor of the South,” said Chef Maas.

A kickoff event held on Tuesday, March 12, launched the competition. Students learned about the Front Porch brand, obtained competition details and had the opportunity to ask questions. Students also sampled four current flavors from the Southern-inspired brand. Flavors included best-selling Nana’s Banana Pudding and Chocolate Rocker and newly launched flavors Happily Pineapply Upside Down Cake and County Fair Fried Apple Pie. Carolyn Malone, JWU alumna, submitted her Memaw’s Pineapple Upside Down Cake recipe in the contest’s first year, which inspired Front Porch’s newest flavor, Happily Pineapply Upside Down Cake. Malone spoke at the kickoff with interested students about last year’s culinary process.

“Last year’s contest was amazing and I am so grateful to Front Porch for making my pineapple upside cake recipe a reality,” Malone said. “I wish all of the students this year good luck.”
